DIY Farmhouse Table
Sean and I have been married for 6 wonderful years and we had the same tiny kitchen table for all 6. It was perfect for our first teeny-tiny apartment, where no more than 4 people could fit in the kitchen, let alone around the table. But fast forward 6 years, when we are wanting to host holiday parties, game nights, or just a few friends for dinner…that tiny pub table fills up pretty quickly. And so began the quest for a new table.
In my quest I came across pictures of gorgeous farmhouse tables. However…$800 and up for a table is simply not acceptable to me. So like any DIYer, I turned my search to Pinterest. I came across several plans for DIY Farmhouse tables that looked good to me so I sent them on through to the final judge…my hubby. After looking through them, he sweetly agreed to take on the challenge. We settled on these plans from Ana White for the table and these plans for the matching benches. We loved the fact that we could customize the size to what we needed and the fact that I could customize the colors! After sizing the plans to what we wanted, the building was all up to Sean.
Once everything was put together and stained (we used Rust-Oleum Varathane Fast Dry Wood Stain in American) we topped the planks with tung oil, which really brought out the rich wood grain. For the bottom portion, I chose to use milk paint that I found at Hobby Lobby. I mixed the different shades until I found the color that I wanted. The fun part of milk paint is layering and sanding different colors until you get the look you are going for. So you can make it as simple or as layered and chippy as you wish. I went for the layered and rustic look using various shades of blue, gray, and white. To finish it out, I used the compatible finishing oil and worked it into the painted wood and VOILA!
I am SO happy with the finished product. Now we can comfortably seat 6-8 people! Bring on the game nights and holiday parties!
